The Isra and Miraj are the two parts of a Night Journey or Shab-e-Meraj that, according to Islamic tradition, the prophet of Islam, Muhammad PBUH took during a single night.

Praise be to Allah Who enabled His slave, Muhammad, to make the journey at night from the Masjid al- Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, which is surrounded a blessed land.

It is demonstrated by the holy traditions that on the night of 27th Rajab, after offering the night prayer Isha, Jibril came to Muhammad PBUH, with a white animal. This white animal was the Buraq, the animal of paradise. This was brought to earth to take Muhammad PBUH for a great ride which was based on the world and heavens both. The ride and the journey which ends in the meeting with the creator, the Allah.

The journey had some stopovers on the way to the heavens. It firstly stooped at, Yathrib then Tur Sina and Bayt Lahm, and finally in Jerusalem at to the Masjid al-Aqsa, where Allah assembled for Muhammad PBUH all the Prophets, from Adam to Isa. Prophet Muhammad led them all in prayer. This is a sign that the Prophet is higher in status than all of the prophets and messengers.

During the Prophet’s journey from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, Allah enabled him to see some of His wondrous creations. The Prophet sees the world like an old woman. This old woman was wearing a great deal of jewelry. Allah also enabled the Muhammad to see Iblis, who stood at a side in His way, but do not dare to interrupt or talk to the Prophet.

The Prophet ascended to the upper heavens through the stairs, called al-mirqat. The Prophet ascended these stairs until he reached the first heaven. On reaching the Gate of Heaven, an angel asked Jibril about the Prophet. On identifying him, gate was opened and Prophet Muhammad entered the first heaven. There, Prophet Muhammad saw Prophet Adam. On the second heaven, it was where Prophet Muhammad meets Prophets Isa and Yahya. Isa and Yahya are cousins. They greet the Prophet and made supplication to him for better things. The Prophet ascended to the third heaven, where he found Prophet Yusuf, who made supplication to him. Then the Prophet ascended to the fourth heaven, he found Prophet Idris. Idris welcomed the Prophet and made supplication for him. In the fifth heaven, the Prophet saw Harun, the brother of Prophet Musa. In the sixth heaven, he met Prophet Musa. All of these Prophets received Prophet Muhammad with a warm welcome and made supplication for him. In seventh heaven, Prophet meets Ibrahim, who is best of the Prophets after our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

After visiting the seven heavens and the Sidratul-Munteha, Prophet ascend to meet the Allah. Allah gifted Prophet the 50 prayers of the day. On his way back, Musa advised Muhammad to request the Almighty, kindly to reduce the number and in nine times the prayers were reduced to five. These five prayers are obligatory and a pillar of religion.  The Muslims, in remembrance of this special occasion and a night miracle spend the 27th night of Rajab, in supplicating Allah and seeking forgiveness of their sins. In 2015, this great night is coming on 16th May.
